2008
PAST ISSUES:
Past issues are available by clicking on Archives at the bottom of the
Newsletter page.
DEFINING STATEMENT:
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers
dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.
NEW ADDRESS: We now have a P O Box
for our address to assure we receive all correspondence. The new address is: P O
Box 2754 , zip 34973.
GOVERNOR'S VISIT: Our club hosted the Governor's Visit to Division 16
on Oct 3 at the American Legion Hall. Gov Dave Liddell's visit was also the
installation banquet for our club officers and other clubs in Division 16.
Golden Corral catered the meal and served prime rib and baked chicken. Maureen
Burroughs coordinated the event and decorated the tables in a Western theme. Gov Dave
gave a very inspirational message on why he joined Kiwanis and encouraged the
club to conduct one service project a month, grow the membership, and support
the "Hats and Hugs" program in memory of his wife. In addition to installing the
officers, Gov Dave inducted Lisa Thomas as our newest member. Our club presented
Gov Dave with some of our outstanding "gifts" including: a $300 gas card
(expired in June); in keeping with our cowboy theme, a "Kiwanis Motivator"
bullwhip and a cow pie desk pen; and a Kiwanis teddy bear for the Hats and Hugs
program. Past Lt Gov Joyce Taylor presented Gov Dave with the official gift from
Division 16, a cross necklace. A special thanks to Maureen for her hard work in
heading up the wonderful evening.
AWARDS DAY: Since our installation
banquet was held in conjunction with the Governors Visit, our club awards will
be presented at the regular meeting on Oct 9. Be sure to attend to give Past
Pres Frank a proper "send off", welcome the new officers for 2009, and recognize
those members who have served the club in a special way.
BABY SHOWER: Our baby shower for the Pregnancy Center
will be
held on Oct 16. Items needed are: diapers, wipes, strollers, baby blankets, sleepers, baby powder, lotion, shampoo, etc, any other baby items
or cash donations. Robbie
Sumner is heading up this project.
BLOOD DRIVES: Two important blood
drives were announced by Raye Duesinger our guest speaker on Sept 4. The first
for Dr Fred Brown, held on Sept 13&14, was a huge success with over 160
units collected. The second is the "Okeechobee
Blood Roundup" on Nov 14&15. This is the third year for the Roundup and the goal
this year is 450 units. Please sign up for the Kiwanis team, as cash prizes will
be awarded to the organization with the most donors.
WORDS OF WISDOM: "Suppose you were
an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress....but then I repeat
myself"- Mark Twain. "A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always
depend on the support of Paul" - George Bernard Shaw. "No man's life, liberty,
or property is safe while the legislature is in session" - Mark Twain. "Talk is
cheap... except when Congress does it" - Unknown.
RECOVERING: Bruce Simpson continues to have issues
with MRSA in his knee. Bob Owens (Kelly's husband)
cancer surgery on Sept 11, was successful and he continues to recuperate. Elvie
Posey had double knee replacement and is recovering well. Best wishes to all for
a full and speedy
