DEFINING STATEMENT:
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers
dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.
NEW ADDRESS: We now have a P O Box
for our address to assure we receive all correspondence. The new address is: P O
Box 2754 , zip 34973.
DAY OF PRAYER: The Day of Prayer sponsored by the Okeechobee Ministerial
Association was on May 1 and was the best attended Day of Prayer in many years
with approximately 250 in attendance. Our Club provided the lunches for the
event and this year served pizza, subs, and hamburgers. We also provided and set
up the tents for the event. A special thanks to: Rev Larry Kilgore for
coordinating the program; Greg Thogersen and Jim Vensel for obtaining the food
and drinks; everyone who helped serve and clean up; and to Marcos Montes de Oca
and J D Mixson for setting up the tents. Also a thank you to CVS, Subway, Mc
Donalds, Burger King, Domino's and J & J Snacks for their donations toward the
lunch.
BUILDER'S CLUBS COOK-OUT: Our
annual cook out for the Yearling Middle School and Osceola Middle School
Builder's Clubs will be held on May 15 at the Sports Complex at noon. Dr Pat
Cooper will be our speaker. Come out
and support our youth K-family members.
MAY MEETING LOCATION: For the May
8,22, & 29 meetings, we will be at the American Legion Hall (behind City Hall).
The American Legion serves sandwiches, salads and wings and has a private
meeting room.
SCHOLARSHIP NIGHT: OHS Scholarship
night will be on May 20 at the OHS Lecture Hall. We will present four, $1,000
scholarships in memory of Dick Blair.
NEW ENDEAVOR REWARD DAY: The Board
voted to support the New Endeavor School Positive Behavior Support Reward Day by
providing and cooking the hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and drinks. The Reward Day
is to give those students who have shown positive behavior an incentive. It will
be held on Jun 2 at the School.
GRAD NIGHT: The annual Grad Night
party co-sponsored by our Club will be after graduation on Jun 5. Please
consider donating to this very worthy project and plan to come out and help with
party on Jun 5.
GENE O'NEILL BENEFIT: A Retirement
Party/ Benefit for Gene O'Neill will be held on Fri, Jun 13, at KOA. Our club
will help set up and decorate on that day. Tickets are $20 single/$30 couple. In
addition to a prime rib dinner, the benefit will feature an auction followed by
a dance. See Jim Vensel for tickets.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS: The
officers for 2008-2009 are: Pres Jim Vensel, VP Greg Thogersen, Secretary Corey
DeHays, Treasurer Megan Mc Clellan, and Directors Marcos Montes de Oca and Jeff
Sumner. Thanks to all for your willingness to serve. Congratulations and best of
luck for a successful year!
CONGRATULATIONS: Toni Doyle has been
appointed as Program Director for Main Street. Congratulations and good luck!
AWARDS: Monica Jones Young was
presented some very nice "going away gifts" at the May 8th meeting, including a
set of "Watford Crystal" Redneck pattern glasses, and a Tiffany boxed gift.
Monica will be relocating to Lakeland in June. We'll miss you!
INTERCLUB: The Kiwanis Club of
Stuart attended our May 8th meeting with an interclub. One of the inter-clubbers
was Lt Gov Elect Bill Hansen.
RECOVERING: Bruce Simpson is home
recovering from his surgery to remove his replacement knee and is now taking
antibiotics to treat the MRSA infection. Best wishes for a full and speedy
recovery!
SYMPATHY: Our sincere sympathy to
Kermit Nichols and family on the death of his wife, Margaret. Our thoughts and
prayers are with you all.
