2008
PAST ISSUES:
Past issues are available by clicking on Archives at the bottom of the
Newsletter page.
DEFINING STATEMENT:
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers
dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.
NEW ADDRESS: We now have a P O Box
for our address to assure we receive all correspondence. The new address is: P O
Box 2754 , zip 34973.
RADIO AUCTION: Our annual Radio
Auction was held on Dec 8, on WOKC. Everything went very smoothly at the
new location, Riverside Bank, and all items received bids. We should make
approximately $2,800 when all items are picked up. Thanks to Jim Vensel for all his time and hard
work on the auction, Riverside Bank for use of their facilities, to WOKC and
Billy Dean for their time and to the Key Club for answering phones.
SANTA IN THE PARK: Head Santa Marcos
reports that Santa went very well with plenty of "elves" to help each night.
Although we saw fewer children this year, it was still a great event with over
300 coloring books and cheeseburger coupons given out. A special thanks to Darrell Enfinger, Marcos
Montes De Oca and Jack Wolff for decorating bandstand, Greg Thogersen for the
coloring books, and Okeechobee McDonald's for the cheeseburger coupons.
EYDC CHRISTMAS PARTY: Our EYDC Christmas Party
was held on Dec 13, and this year we had the
party at EIHH (Eckerd Intensive Halfway House). Each of the 30 young men was
presented a gift basket containing body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, a writing
tablet, photo album, puzzle book , candy, and a card with a McDonald's
Cheeseburger coupon. Rev Jim Dawson gave an inspirational talk and the boys
enjoyed all the "goodies" donated by our members. All the young men and the
staff were very appreciative. One even commented that he had received no
presents last year, so this was special to him. Thanks to Jim Vensel, Greg
Thogersen and Dowling Watford for attending, to Rev Jim Dawson for presenting
the program and everyone who donated treats.
CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY: Our Club
Christmas party was absolutely hilarious! We had a really good time with the
"Chinese Gift Exchange" with such great gifts as: a really ugly carved coconut,
a Red Lobster gift card (with zero balance), and, of course, the famous Marcos
picture.
SOUPER BOWL OF CARING: We will again
participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring project. Each Thursday during
January we will collect canned and dry goods to be presented to the Food Bank at
the Presbyterian Church on Jan 31, just before the Super Bowl.
AWARDS: Pres Frank Irby presented
Wendy Woodman a certificate and several gifts in recognition of her service to
the club as secretary. In addition to a Kiwanis pen and pencil set, Wendy was
given a beautiful KOA tote bag (in true Okeechobee Kiwanis Club fashion).
MARGE BLAIR MATH MINI GRANTS: The
Okeechobee Educational Foundation will present the Marge Blair Math Mini Grants
at an awards ceremony on Jan 28 at the School Board offices.
CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to
Key Club President, Rachael Holt, for receiving the Brahman Award for the OHS
golf team.
IN THE NEWS: An article on the front
page of the Okeechobee News featured Dowling Watford and his hobby of Civil War
re-enacting. Past Governor Donna Batelaan was featured in an article in
the Dec issue of Kiwanis Magazine for her unending work on behalf of the
handicapped.
