DEFINING STATEMENT:
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers
dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.
NEW ADDRESS: We now have a P O Box
for our address to assure we receive all correspondence. The new address is: P O
Box 2754 , zip 34973.
EASTER PANCAKE BREAKFAST: The annual
Pancake Breakfast was again successful with approximately 300 served at the
Freshman Campus and 120 at the satellite location at the First United Methodist
Church. Our net profit should be about $3,500. A special thank you to Greg Thogersen for chairing the event, Darrell
Enfinger for setting up the grilles, Brad Stark and crew for clean up, Key Club
for serving, and to everyone who helped in any way.
DAY OF PRAYER: We will once again
assist with the Day of Prayer sponsored by the Okeechobee Ministerial
Association on May 1. We will prepare sack lunches and provide drinks for the
noon event at the Courthouse. We will not meet at the Village Square on that
day, so bring your lawn chair and participate in this uplifting event.
BUILDER'S CLUBS COOK-OUT: Our
annual cook out for the Yearling Middle School and Osceola Middle School
Builder's Clubs will be held on May 15 at the Sports Complex at noon. Come out
and support our youth K-family members.
MAY MEETING LOCATION: For the May
8,22, & 29 meetings, we will be at the American Legion Hall (behind City Hall).
The American Legion serves sandwiches, salads and wings and has a private
meeting room.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Nominations
Committee Chairman, Past Pres Marcos Montes de Oca, has presented the slate of
officers for 2008-2009: Pres Jim Vensel, VP Greg Thogersen, Secretary Corey
DeHays, Treasurer Megan Mc Clellan, and Directors Marcos Montes de Oca and Jeff
Sumner. Election will be held on Apr 17 and nominations will be accepted from
the floor.
SCIENCE FAIR: The Board voted
to donate $500 to help sponsor the Science Fair for the Okeechobee Schools.
Several of our students will be going to the State Science Fair in Lakeland and
two Okeechobee students will attend the International Science Fair in Atlanta.
LT-GOV VISIT: Our Division 16 Lt
Gov, Gary Hawken, attended a recent meeting as our guest speaker. Lt Gov Gary
discussed Governor Mark Taylor's goals for this year, the International
Convention in Orlando, and encouraged the members to continue the great work our
club does.
DIVISION 16: The Kiwanis Club of
Okeechobee is now the largest Club in Division 16 with 60 members as of Feb
reports.
INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION: Pres-elect
Jim Vensel will be our delegate to the International Convention in Orlando on
Jun 26-29. Jim also volunteered to assist with registration. If anyone else
would like to attend, please see Pres Frank Irby for information.
CONGRATULATIONS: Dr Pat Cooper will
be presented with the Indian River College Distinguished Alumni Award on Apr 10.
Congratulations!
RECOVERING: Bruce Simpson is home
recovering from his surgery to remove his replacement knee and is now taking
antibiotics to treat the MRSA infection. Margaret Nichols is in the Okeechobee
Rehabilitation Facility recovering from hip and shoulder surgery.
Please
keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
IN THE NEWS: Yearling Middle School
Builders Club Christmas project at the Okeechobee Health Care Facility was
featured in the Apr/May Florida Kiwanian Magazine.
NEW MEMBERS: Libby Maxwell (wife of
member Devin Maxwell) was approved by the Board at the April Board
Meeting. Welcome!
