PAST ISSUES:
Past issues are available by clicking on Archives at the bottom of the
Newsletter page.
DEFINING STATEMENT:
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers
dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.
NEW ADDRESS: We now have a P O Box
for our address to assure we receive all correspondence. The new address is: P O
Box 2754 , zip 34973.
PANCAKE BREAKFAST: Our annual
Pancake Breakfast fundraiser was again very successful due to the hard
work and leadership of the chairman, Greg Thogerson. Although our attendance was
down, the profit will be somewhat larger due to donations received. A
special thanks to Greg for Chairing the event and to all who worked at either
the Freshman Campus or the Methodist Church.
SCHOLARSHIPS: Our Kiwanis Memorial Scholarships
were awarded at OHS Scholarship night on May 17. We awarded four, $1,000.00
Scholarships and joined with the Okeechobee Educational Foundation to award
another $1,000. Our four recipients were: Kyle Durham (ranked 6th in class,
National Honor Society and will attend IRCC); Victoria Hannon (ranked 11th in
class, National Honor Society, intern at Okeechobee News and will attend UF);
Alejandra Tinajero ( ranked 3rd in class, National Honor Society, CNA, also
received AA degree from IRCC and will attend USF); Brianne Viens (ranked 1st in
class, National Honor Society and will attend IRCC & UF). The Kiwanis/OEF
Scholarship was presented to Jason Knapp (OHS Academy of Finance) for the
outstanding number of volunteer hours he has completed, (1,655 hours).
DAY OF PRAYER: Our club assisted
with the Day of Prayer sponsored by the Okeechobee Ministerial Association on May 3 at the Courthouse.
Many of our members were in attendance and we provided sack lunches for all those attending. Thanks
to those who helped prepare the lunches and to Greg Thogerson for providing
the supplies for the sandwiches.
SPONSORED YOUTH COOK-OUT: Our
Cook-Out with our Key and Builders Clubs was held on May 10 at the Sports Complex.
There was a large turnout and it was great to see so many young people involved
in the clubs. A delicious lunch of Hamburgers and Hot
Dogs was expertly prepared by Noel and Ben! Each Club's officers were recognized
and the club sponsors were each presented a gift from the Club.
GRAD NIGHT: The Grad Night Party was
held on May 31 after graduation. Matt Buxton again coordinated a very successful
event. The OHS seniors enjoyed a night of bowling, games, food and especially
thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. Our Club was one of the founding
sponsors of this event and contributes $1000 each year.
WRANGLER RODEO: Steve Cates
introduced the two Okeechobee students, Lexi Peaden and Gabrielle Carden, who
will attend the Wrangler Junior High National Championship Rodeo in Gallup, NM,
July 1-7 to the club at the Jun 7th meeting. Several fundraisers are scheduled
to help finance their trip. A BBQ and Rodeo will be held on Jun 17 at the
Cattlemen's Arena and a dinner at Golden Corral on Jun 19. The Club will also
donate all fine money during June.
CLUB ANNIVERSARY: At our
meeting on Jun 28, we will have an anniversary celebration. Several of our older
members will give a club history and comment on interesting events that have
taken place over the years and some new members will speak on why they joined
and what the club means to them. Plan to join in this celebration.
BOARD ACTIONS: The June Board of
Director's meeting was a lengthy one with some great discussions. Paul Mitchell
suggested that the Terrific Kids awards just be presented once a year at the
school awards day. The Board agreed but will continue the awards at New Endeavor
School weekly. The Village Square will be approached about allowing a
Kiwanis bulletin board to be placed in the Restaurant to publicize Club events.
The Board is also considering some type of token of appreciation to present to
our speakers. Currently, Pres Frank sends each speaker a hand written thank you
note. The Board meets the first Thursday of each month immediately following our
regular meeting and all members are invited to attend.
OFFICERS: The officers for 2007-2008
are: Pres- Frank Irby; VP- Jim Vensel; Sec- Corey Crum; Treas- Jeff Sumner, and
