2007
PAST ISSUES:
Past issues are available by clicking on Archives at the bottom of the
Newsletter page.
DEFINING STATEMENT:
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers
dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.
NEW ADDRESS: We now have a P O Box
for our address to assure we receive all correspondence. The new address is: P O
Box 2754 , zip 34973.
RADIO AUCTION: Our annual Radio
Auction was held on Sat, Dec 9 and was very successful thanks to Jim Vensel's
leadership. We will clear approximately $2,000. A special thanks to WOKC, DJ
Billy Dean, SunTrust Bank and the Key Club for answering the phones.
SANTA IN THE PARK: Santa was once
again big hit with all the children. Although not a fundraiser for the Club, we
will net about $600. Thanks to Head Santa, Marcos Montes De Oca for coordinating
the event and Santas: Macros Montes De Oca, Jeff Sumner, Greg Thogersen, and Bruce
Simpson. Thanks to all the "elves" who helped out and especially the Key Club
for their assistance.
EYDC CHRISTMAS PARTY: The EYDC
Christmas party was really appreciated by the 15 young men of Carver
Cottage. They certainly enjoyed the cakes/cookies provided by our members and
had a good time taking the pictures. Each boy was given a $3.00 gift certificate
to the EYDC Canteen, a stuffed Christmas toy and 3 Polaroid pictures to keep. A
special thanks to Rev Jim Dawson for providing the inspirational program.
GIFT EXCHANGE: Our Christmas gift
exchange suggested by Jay Zeller was hilarious and a lot of fun. Our members
went all out to find the perfect gift for their fellow Kiwanians! Some of the
wonderful gifts included: Boxer shorts (and worse), beautiful pictures (Marcos
in drag), Kiwanian of the year (aka Kelly Owens), University of Okeechobee cap
(printed upside down) and many others. As an added bonus, for the fines,
everyone had to shoot a ball into a net on Dowling Watford's head (see
photos). Dowling, the things we'll do for Kiwanis!
TIE EXCHANGE: For our New Year's
meeting, Red Larson came up with the idea of a "tie exchange" similar to the
idea of a ladies cookie exchange. This was another fun meeting. You have never
seen so many ugly ties. The consensus was that a pink stripped, clip-on tie won
the prize for ugliest. Watch out, you may see it again next year!
SPONSORED YOUTH: Our Key Club has
been very active and has really supported our activities by helping with the
Radio Auction and Santa in the Park. Key Club officers are: Rachel Holt-Pres;
Leah Burke-VP; Raychel Kauffman-Sec; and Ryan Porter-Treas. Pres Rachel was a
lovely "Holiday Barbie" at our Santa in the Park! The Yearling Middle School
Builder's Club has also been active in projects including the Shoe Box project.
The Club is sponsored by Mrs Sylvia Bandi.
SOUPER BOWL OF CARING: The Board
agreed to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring program featured by a recent
speaker. The program is supported by several NFL teams with the goal of fighting
hunger. Our Souper Bowl of Caring event will be held on Feb 1. All members are
asked wear their favorite team shirt or cap and to bring can/dry goods for
donation to the Food Bank at the Presbyterian Church. We will also donate the
fine money to the Food Bank.
FLORIDA KIWANIAN: Okeechobee
received a mention in the Dec/Jan issue of the Florida Kiwanian. In the First
Lady's Message, Janet Krasulak commented on the great time everyone had at the
Governor's Visit here. She also commented on Lt Gov Cindy Miller's line
dancers and the gift of the mandella (although she didn't mention our "special"
gifts to Gov Phil - I wonder why?). If you do not receive the Florida
Kiwanian by mail, you can view it online at
www.floridakiwanis.com.
KIWANIS EDUCATION DAY: In
conjunction with the next Division Council Meeting, Division 16 will participate
in Governor Phil's Kiwanis Education Day. The training will be held at IRCC on
Jan 20 and begin with a breakfast at 8:45. Sessions will include: membership,
membership retention, fundraising, and forums for Key Club, Builders Club and
Aktion Club. Guest speakers will include Past Gov Randy Johnson and District
Chairs Ed Lillich and Barbara Pyle.
RECOVERING: Gene O'Neil is
recovering from chemo treatments for cancer; Sara Sims, Ben's mother is
recovering from a liver transplant; Sheryl Thogersen is recovering from surgery.
Bobi O'Neil goes back to Pittsburg for additional surgery on Jan 19. Our best wishes for a full and speedy
recovery.
CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to
Wendy Woodman for receiving the KOA President's Award. Way to go Wendy!
