2006
PAST ISSUES:
Past issues are available by clicking on Archives at the bottom of the
Newsletter page.
NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER: Our Club
assisted the Okeechobee Ministerial Association with the National Day of Prayer
at the Courthouse lawn on May 4, by providing sack lunches for all those who
attended. Paul Mitchell, Jim Vensel, Bruce Simpson, Dowling and Cheri Watford
prepared 200 sandwiches with chips, brownie (from Jay Zeller at J & J
Snacks) and soft drink. The sack lunches were very well received and appreciated
by those in attendance and a nice thank you note was received from Mr and Mrs
Vergil Hayes. The Board has voted to continue this project next year also, so
mark your calendars for the first Thurs in May.
INSTALLATION BANQUET: The incoming Kiwanis
Governor, Phil Yorston, has offered to attend and officiate at our annual
installation banquet. This is quite an honor for our club and the Board accepted
the offer. The installation banquet will be held on Sept 30. Mark your calendars
and watch for more details.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Our annual
election of officers will take place before the end of May. Past Pres Jeff
Sumner will be chair of the nominating committee. Please contact Jeff with any
suggestions for positions or if you are interested in serving.
GRAD NIGHT: The Club donated $1,000
for the Grad Night party to Matt Buxton at the May 11 meeting. As you may
recall, our Club was one of the original sponsors of Grad Night and Matt
continues his father, Paul, as the chairman for the event. Grad Night will be
May 30 after graduation at Stardust Lanes bowling alley. Please come out and
help if you can. Just show up at about 11:00
PM.
EASTER PANCAKE BREAKFAST: The Breakfast was a HUGE success with about 450 people served (at both
locations) and almost $6,000 collected so far. The new location worked great,
with everyone commenting on how smoothly everything went. A special thanks to:
Greg Thorgerson for chairing, Darrell Enfinger for set up and organization, Don
Kelly for set up and coffee and pancake batter mixing, Noel Stephen (and crew)
for clean up, Ray Arrants for ordering supplies, Red Larson for providing the
sausage, Joe Hazellief for providing orange juice, Al Stokes for acting as
Maitre'D, the Freshman Campus staff for allowing us to use the cafeteria, Cheri
Watford and Richard Kersey for handling the Methodist Church breakfast, and
everyone who helped in any way!
RIF: Your Board voted to again help
sponsor RIF (Reading is Fundamental) in our Elementary Schools. Each child get
to pick out and take home a book thru this program. Due the increase in the
number of students and the costs of the program, the Board voted to cap our
donation at $3,000.
