SCHOLARSHIP: The recipient of our
Kiwanis Scholarship this year is Ashley Nichole Childers. Ashley is the daughter
of Billy and Carla Kay Childers. She graduated 11th in her class with a 3.74 GPA
and completed 4 years of math and science in honors and dual enrollment classes.
Ashley was very active at OHS including: Cheerleader, softball, baseball
statistician, Scholar Athlete 2002-2006, National Honor Society, BETA Club,
Latin Club and was in the Gifted Program. In addition to the Kiwanis
Scholarship, she also received the Bob Teany Memorial, FL Bright Futures, IRCC
Academic, Okee-Tantie Title, and Youth Livestock Show scholarships ( $23,779
total). Ashley plans to attend UF and become a pharmacist. Congratulations and
good luck!
ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Officers for
the new Kiwanis year beginning Oct 1, are: Frank Irby-Pres; Jim Vensel-VP; Wendy Woodman-Sec;
Jeff Sumner-Treas; Marcos Montes De Oca-Past Pres; and Bennett Yeilding and Paul
Mitchell-Directors. Thanks to all for their willingness to serve.
GRAD NIGHT: The Club donated $1,000
for the Grad Night party to Matt Buxton at the May 11 meeting. As you may
recall, our Club was one of the original sponsors of Grad Night. Grad Night was
again a huge success and very well attended with lots of food and prizes for the
graduates. Thanks to Matt Buxton for all his work and to everyone who
volunteered their time to help.
MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM: The May 25,
meeting included a salute to our veterans in honor of Memorial Day. Past Pres
& Lt Gov Jerry Bryant was the guest speaker and Randy Whipple provided
special music for the program. Our sincere appreciation to Paul Mitchell for
organizing the event.
DIVISION COUNCIL MEETING: Pres
Marcos and Dowling Watford represented the Club at the May Division Council
Meeting. Speakers for the evening were: Jennilyn Thilboult-Circle K Governor
from UF; Robert Bruton-Key Club District Secretary from South Fork High School;
and Mr Eddie Lee, Ex Director of the Miracle League of Florida. The Miracle League
promotes the building of "barrier free" baseball fields for disabled
children. Other business included a round table discussion of all the
clubs' activities and events, the election of Jocelyn Lane as Division 16 Fl
Foundation Trustee, and the announcement by Lt Gov-Elect Cindy Miller on Club
Leadership Training on Jun 10, at IRCC.
KIWANIS HONORS: Greg Thorgerson was
recognized for his service as Chairman of the Pancake Breakfast. Greg received
the famous "Blank Plaque" and a Kiwanis Motivator (a 2X4). Monica
Clark of Glades Gas was presented a Certificate of Appreciation plaque and a
gift certificate to Lightsey's Restaurant from the Club for Glade Gas' support
of the Pancake Breakfast for over 30 years.
ATTENDANCE: Our Summer
"slump" seems to have hit early and our attendance at the weekly
meeting has dropped. Please make every effort to attend during the Summer to
support our Club and our speakers.
