PAST ISSUES:
Past issues are available by clicking on Archives at the bottom of the
Newsletter page.
DEFINING STATEMENT:
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers
dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.
NEW ADDRESS: We now have a P O Box
for our address to assure we receive all correspondence. The new address is: P O
Box 2754 , zip 34973.
PANCAKE BREAKFAST. Our Easter
Pancake Breakfast on Apr 12 held at Cowboy's Restaurant was a huge success with
the most customers in recent history. We served approximately 600 at Cowboys and
about 100 at the "satellite" breakfast at the First United Methodist Church.
Gross profit was over $6,000. Chairman J. D. Mixson did an outstanding job
coordinating and promoting the breakfast. Lori Mixson is commended for
raising over $500 selling the prize eggs. A special "thank you" to Cowboys
Restaurant for allowing us to use their location and for their generous donation
of supplies (when we ran out due to the large crowd), and to Richard Kersey for
cooking at the Methodist Church. (see pictures on photo gallery). At the Apr 23
meeting Jim Coin from Cowboys was presented a certificate of appreciation and J
D was given a thank you card form the club.
BEARS AND HATS: The Club
participated in Governor David Liddell's project to provide hats and bears to
kids in stressful situations by presenting over 500 bears to the Sheriffs Office and Police Department on Apr 23.
Sheriff Paul May and Police Chief Denny Davis were on hand to accept the
donations. We were also honored to have Lt-Gov Bill Hansen and Lt-Gov
Elect Mike Farley in attendance. Thanks to all our members and the community for
the generous donations. (see pictures in photo gallery)
DAY OF PRAYER: The club will provide a lunch for the Day of Prayer on May 7, sponsored by the
Okeechobee Ministerial Association. The location will be in front of the new Courthouse.
This will be our meeting, so we will not meet at the American Legion on
this day. Bring a lawn chair and a friend!
SPONSORED YOUTH COOK-OUT: Our annual
cook-out for the Builders' and Key Clubs will be held on May 21 at the Sports
Complex. Please come out and enjoy a hotdog or hamburger and meet our
outstanding young people and their sponsors.
LT-GOV ELECT: At the Division
Council Meeting (DCM) on Apr 19 hosted by Lt-Gov Bill Hansen, Mike Farley was
elected Lt-Gov for the 2009-2010 Kiwanis year. Mike is a member of the Stuart
Kiwanis Club. Best wishes to Lt-Gov Elect Mike for a very successful year.
SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESS: The Club
received a note from Sara Hedges thanking the Club of its support over the past
four years with our scholarship funds. Sara (granddaughter of Mayor Jim and
Zella Kirk) graduated Summa Cum Laude from FSU this month and will attend Mercer
University for law school.
KEY CLUB DISTRICT TREASURER: Dr
Joyce Taylor reports that Katie Goode, former Key Club Division 16 Lt-Gov and a
member of the Martin County High School Key Club, was elected Florida District
Treasurer. Congratulations Katie!
KIWANIS AWARDS: Jim Cole (winter
visitor from IN) was "honored" for his outstanding service to the Club at his
last meeting with us for the season. His "valuable" awards included beans for
his beanbag baseball and a paperweight to remember the club (Rotary). We look
forward to Jim's return to KOA in the Fall. (see picture in photo gallery)
RECOVERING: Bruce Simpson got a very
good report from his doctor on his last visit and seems to finally be on the
road to recovery. Our prayers and sincere best wishes for a
complete recovery!
WORDS OF WISDOM: "It will be of
little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice if
the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they
cannot be understood" - Pres James Madison (editors note- sound like the IRS
code?)
