       FEBRUARY, 2009

PAST ISSUES: Past issues are available by clicking on Archives at the bottom of the Newsletter page.

DEFINING STATEMENT: Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

NEW ADDRESS: We now have a P O Box for our address to assure we receive all correspondence. The new address is: P O Box 2754 ,  zip 34973.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING: Our Souper Bowl of Caring food items were presented to the Food Pantry at the Presbyterian Church on Jan 29. The Club donated 350-400 pounds of canned/dry goods and $100 to help support those in our community who need a little help. Thanks to Marcos for heading up this fun and worthwhile project and to the one "idiot" (Dowling) who wore a NFL jersey on that day.

MATH MINI-GRANTS: The Dick and Marge Blair Math Mini-Grants were presented by the Okeechobee Educational Foundation on Jan 20. It was a very special presentation this year, as both of their daughters, Ricki and Marge, attended the ceremony. The recipients of the $500 awards were: Lori Howard & Brooke Weigand of Central Elementary, Patti Padgett of Seminole Elementary, and Brooke Louthan Brown of South Elementary. Several other mini-grants were presented by Rotary and the Educational Foundation. It appears that our Club has begun another great project that has encouraged others to participate, just as we did with scholarships in the 1970's. (see photos in Photo Gallery)

EMAIL PEN PAL: Tracy Maxwell Downing has been corresponding  by email with a member of a Kiwanis Club in the Ukraine, Lora Pavlenko. Tracy reports that it has been a really interesting and rewarding conversation and she has learned a lot about their culture. The Ukraine has been struggling with their economy and with war (sound familiar?) and communication is sporadic since they are often without electricity. Lora was in Tampa visiting last year, but could not arrange transportation to come to Okeechobee. Her latest email was sent out by Maureen. Let us know if you would like to see it. Lora is currently looking for a pastor to talk with one of their members who has just begun a church. Contact Tracey if you are interested in an email address.

FEBRUARY BOARD MEETING: The Feb Board Meeting was postponed until Feb 12, due to the length of the program on Feb 5.  See next month's newsletter for Board actions.

VIP VISIT: Florida Kiwanis District Growth Chairman, Eddie Lee, attended a recent meeting and encouraged the club to invite guests and recruit new members.

SPEAKER SCHEDULE: The speaker schedule for 2009 is posted on the web site under the "Speaker" tab. Jay Zeller is again coordinating. Please contact Jay with any questions or problems providing a program.

RECOVERING: Bruce Simpson will have another knee operation on Feb 10 in Tampa. Mark Reynolds will have a stent put in on Feb 11 at Florida Hospital. Kathryn Montes De Oca (Marcos' daughter) will have heart surgery on Mar 10. Our prayers and sincere best wishes for a successful outcome!

WORDS OF WISDOM: "A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have"- Thomas Jefferson.
